Federal Investment Tax Credit (ITC)

The federal government currently offers a 30% investment tax credit on the total cost of residential solar systems, available through 2032. This is one of the most advantageous solar tax credits the government has provided.

How It Works:

If you purchase a solar system outright, you can use 30% of the system’s total installation cost to reduce your federal tax liability for the year.

Example: For a solar system priced at $20,000, this credit would provide a $6,000 reduction on your federal taxes.

It’s important to note that this benefit is a tax credit, not a direct cash rebate.

Starting in 2033, the tax credit will decrease to 26%, and after 2034, the credit for residential solar systems will be phased out.

Colorado State Sales Tax Exemption

Colorado provides a state sales tax exemption on solar energy system components for homeowners, which can significantly reduce installation costs. This exemption generally applies to certain state-administered special district taxes, though it does not usually extend to state-administered city and county taxes.

How It Works:

Residential solar power components are exempt from Colorado’s state sales and use taxes but are still subject to taxes levied by local governments, including cities, counties, and towns.

Eligible Components Include:

Ineligible Components Include:

Note: Labor costs are not covered under this exemption.

Net Metering

Net metering is a billing benefit that lets homeowners maximize their solar energy production. If your solar panels generate more electricity than you use, your utility company will credit the excess energy toward future bills, allowing you to save even more on energy costs.
